Frequently Asked Questions

OT services and outdoor occupational therapy

  • No! Although many children who receive OT services do have a diagnosis, it is not required. We work with the child, not the diagnosis.

  • It really varies. Our goal with the groups is to ensure a fantastic experience for all participants while keeping safety at the forefront. If your child exhibits significant behaviors that make group settings difficult, it may be beneficial to start with 1:1 OT focused on skill development. Additionally, if your child has a tendency to elope, group OT may not be suitable at this moment.

An initial assessment with the OT will help to determine what type of therapy would be best.

  • This depends! At EC OT we love to use public areas that your family can also access in the community. We have some planned locations for outdoor therapy; however, 1:1 sessions may take place in the client’s home or a mutually agreed upon location, for example the library.

  • At EC OT we do not believe in “bad weather”, just the wrong clothing! We remain outside in most types of weather and allow for great learning, teaching resilience and a different sensory experience. If there are thunderstorms or high winds forecasted, your OT will contact you in advance to find a different location for services.

  • For outdoor OT sessions, please bring the following:

    • Appropriate footwear (ex. running shoes, rain boots)

    • Appropriate outdoor clothing that may become dirty (ex. a coat, splash pants)

    • A change of clothing

    • A water bottle and a small peanut free snack

    • A hat, sunscreen, bug repellent etc.

All therapeutic material will be found in nature or brought by the OT.

  • As with any service, the primary risk is your child may not respond as planned to services, the time commitment and the monetary commitment.

Specific to outdoor OT, there are inherent risks to the outdoors. Although we try to mitigate these risks, they are still assumed upon signing all on boarding forms. Risk include potential bug bites, bee stings, basic slips/ trips/ falls, bumps and bruises from risky play etc.

  • For 1:1 sessions, it is encouraged that parents participate/ stay during sessions to ensure carry over at home. This can be discussed with your OT.

For group sessions, parents are unable to stay due to the privacy of other children in the group.
